As of Spring 1998, thirty one wombats have come to Japan from Australia. Most came as goodwill ambassadors from sister cities in Australia. Unfortunately six of them have died, but we have two new generations growing up. Two common wombats came from the Melbourne Zoo
in June 1978. Unfortunately they died in 1979 and
1993 respectively. This beautiful drawing is from the
leaflet for wombats issued by Asahiyama Zoo.

Of them two died in 1993 and 1995 respectively. At this moment

in Mar 1987 while Kiyoko came in Aug 1987. Both Hiroki and

In May 1990 Waine, Wandar and Tia came as goodwill
ambassadors for the 25th anniversary of the sister city
relationship between Lauceston, Tasmania and Ikeda, Osaka.
When they came their weight was only about 8Kg, but now
they have grown up to over double in weight.
As the first wonderful event in Japan, Waine and Wandar
got their babies Satsuki in Jan 1992 and Sakura in Sep
next year.

In May 1986 Bob and Hazel came as goodwill ambassadors from
Adelaide which has a sister city relationship with Himeji city.
They are hairy nosed wombats, rare even in Australia.
